Richard T – not quite.

1. We’re an ageing population and therefore therefore this is a response to the projections of number of workforce going forward.

2. There is not a fixed number of jobs.

3. What “income”? The State Pension? You have to formally retire to claim it. And, frankly, surely the Government will be quite happy with older people still paying into the Pension Fund with their NI, than actually drawing it out.

Of course, working *after* retirement is a completely different ball-game.

So, from the department of unintended consquences, when the supply of jobs for young people dries up because folk in their 60s who will have an income anyway want to keep on working wait for the screaming headlines about youth unemployment.

I think they’ve somehow managed to both be right – almost what Richard said, but the legal ruling means that even in the future firms can individually decide their own cut-off point (whereas at the moment 65 is the automatic for all companies).

This may be a clever marketing move by the Express. Look at the Mail’s frontpage headline, and turn the same topic into DOOMSDAY FEAR, whatever the reality.

Sure, it’s about as ethical as a real-life re-enactment of a Jimmy Carr joke, but if it boosts turnover, who gives a chimp?
