Oh I wish that we could stop this D-I-V
Virginia Ironside, Mail, today:
Lots of things, really. It's a painful article, containing stuff like this
and this
and contains an awful lot of wearying self-flagellation from the author. "I felt - and rightly, I think - a complete failure," says Virginia. Too harsh on yourself, I think, although I think it would be a little unfair to ask why Ironside should feel a failure for something perfectly ordinary and sadly inevitable in some cases, which happens to a lot of people in their lives, when she could feel much more of a failure for writing rubbish like that.
Anyway, this all comes about because:
Ah, I see. Where is this 'divorce list' then? I imagine it'll be on the Debenhams website, given the enormous coverage in all the papers about it... hang on a minute, then, it's... er...
Mm. I'm not so sure that's actually what I was looking for. Still, it's provided fodder for gaseous eruptions like this, so it's served its purpose. Oh and by the way, this is the headline:

Reading that headline, my mind wanders onto how such a headline gets cleared.
Logic, divorce from partner, ending of a relationship, for some, a truly happy time – comparison – dead, unborn babies. Never known anyone to celebrate a miscarriage, I do know personally, people who felt blessed with freedom the day they got divorced.
Why am I attempting to explain this headline, or understand it, or ever use any capacity for thought to analyse anything written by this women, ever, again.
Do you think it might be a possibility that certain bloggers have infiltrated the right-wing press? With the intention to churn out articles for us to laugh hysterically at (60,000 snow deaths) or cry in utter disbelief, like this one.
Logic and reason. Divorce and Miscarriage. Liddle and The Independent. Ironside and Brain Cells.
The enemies within.

What the fuck???!!!
'May be some relief at shedding a horribly violent husband?'
Well yes, I suppose there MAY be eh. Does this journalist really mean to imply that this relief would/should be nothing compared to the tragic feeling of failure at having a broken marriage?
I can scarcely believe what I'm reading. Is this what's known as 'family values'?
Oh, I'm really cross now.

Here's my guess: Debenhams sent out a press release and tried to gets some free publicity. The succeeded.

Hi,
I have been nominated for the rather mysterious (and unfortunately named) 'Kreativ Blogger' award by Catherine Grant at Film Studies for free (http://filmstudiesforfree.blogspot.com/2010/01/award-season-begins.html). Part of the rubric of the award states that you nominate 7 other bloggers, and I have put yours down on my list (http://thelesserfeat.blogspot.com/2010/01/kreativ-blogger-award.html). Please feel free to ignore it, but I just thought I should let you know. Equally, if you'd rather not be involved for whatever reason, I'd be glad to remove you from the selection…
Anyway, all the best,
James

A data point: my soon to be ex- wife is behaving in just such a bereaved fashion.
Which is odd considering how she hated me when we were together.
Life's funny, eh?
